Delors, Jacques
(1925- )
   political figure
   Born in Paris, Jacques Delors, after a career at the Bank of France (1945-62), joined the cabinet of Premier jacques chaban-delmas (1965-72) as minister of social and cultural affairs. A member of the Socialist Party (1974), European deputy (1979), minister of the economy and finances from 1981 to 1984, he proposed in 1982 a pause in social reforms and an austere plan to freeze prices and wages. President of the European Commission in Brussels (1985-95), Delors was a proponent of a political, economic, and monetary union of Europe, and he contributed to the drawing up of the Maastricht Treaty.
